Saliva Testing

We use saliva testing to accurately determine levels of hormones in the body. It is a convenient and proven method that can be done at home, once you’ve discussed which hormones and when to test with Dr. Barker.

Research shows a strong correlation between hormone levels in the saliva and the amount of hormone in the blood that is active or "bioavailable." Testing the saliva measures the ‘’active” form of hormones that have left the blood stream, gone into the tissue, done their work and then exit the tissue via the saliva. saliva test

Oftentimes, women who suspect hormone imbalances will have their blood hormone levels measured, only to be told they have “normal” levels and therefore not responsible for any symptoms.

Fortunately, testing saliva will reveal the true, functional amount of hormones in the tissue, and this is quite revealing in terms of linking symptoms of hormone imbalance to specific levels of hormones. This way, we can determine to which degree her hormones are out of balance, and where to begin treatment.

If you suspect that your health issues are related to your hormones, we encourage you to come in and learn about this accurate form of testing.

We use this form of testing for women's hormone issues, men's hormone issues, and adrenal fatigue. For thyroid problems, we use a blood test.

Hormones we test in saliva include:

  • Estradiol
  • Estrone
  • Estriol
  • Progesterone
  • Testosterone
  • DHEA-S
  • Cortisol
  • You can also purchase your own test kits online; you can select the test(s) you want to get. Your results will be emailed to you with an interpretation; keep in mind we do require an in-office appointment if you would like your results interpreted clinically beyond those you receive.
